Bison Land is not a place that “runs on its own.”
It is a place that continues to exist because people choose, year after year, to support it.
On an autumn morning at the Visitor Center of Vânători-Neamț Natural Park, a group of children were quietly watching a screen showing images of European bison roaming free.
For some of them, it was the first time they learned that this legendary mammal, extinct in Romania for nearly two centuries, now lives here again. Not in a story. Not in an old photograph. But in the forests of northern Neamț County, Romania.
At the end, one of the children asked simply:
“And who makes sure they stay here?”
His question is, in fact, the essential question for Bison Land.
Where is Bison Land?
Bison Land is the ecotourism destination of Neamț County. It overlaps with Vânători-Neamț Natural Park and the localities of Agapia, Bălțătești, Crăcăoani, Vânători-Neamț and Târgu-Neamț.
Covering over 30,000 hectares of protected area, nature, culture, and spirituality coexist here in a rare balance.
Here, the European bison can be encountered in captivity, semi-wild conditions, and full freedom, an exceptional situation in Europe.
Here stand some of the most important monastic settlements in the Carpathians: Neamț Monastery, Agapia Monastery, Văratec Monastery, Sihăstria Monastery, Secu Monastery, Sihla Monastery, and many others, continuing an uninterrupted tradition of more than seven centuries. It is no coincidence that this area is often called the “Athos of Romania”.
Here, Neamț Citadel overlooks the Ozana Valley, and the memorial houses of Ion Creangă, Mihail Sadoveanu, Alexandru Vlahuță, and Veronica Micle preserve the memory of a literature inspired by these lands.
Here, there are artisans, local producers, spa resorts such as Oglinzi and Bălțătești, ancient forests, the Silver Forest Nature Reserve and the Copper Forest.
Everything seems natural. Stable. Given.
But it is not.
What is visible. And what is not.
You see a marked hiking trail.
You do not see the project behind it.
You see a gazebo in a meadow.
You do not see the funding attracted for its construction.
You see an EcoBrunch where local producers tell their stories.
You do not see the coordination work that brought them together.
You see a certified ecotourism destination, included since 2017 in the Top 100 Sustainable Destinations worldwide.
You do not see the responsibility of maintaining this standard year after year.
Since 2015, the Bison Land Association has served as the Destination Management Unit for Bison Land , Neamț County’s ecotourism destination.
This role means more than promotion or isolated projects. It means coordinating the ecotourism development of the entire micro-region overlapping Vânători-Neamț Natural Park and the localities of Agapia, Bălțătești, Crăcăoani, Vânători-Neamț and Târgu-Neamț.
It means assuming responsibility for:
the coherence of tourism development;
maintaining and improving the standards of a certified ecotourism destination;
constant collaboration with local administrations and Vânători-Neamț Natural Park;
supporting the local economy by developing authentic products and experiences;
ongoing support for local producers and artisans, for all community members who wish to develop small businesses connected to ecotourism;
responsible promotion of natural, cultural, and spiritual heritage;
monitoring the impact on the community and the environment.
Within this assumed framework:
– over 3.7 million lei have been attracted through 14 implemented projects;
– hiking and cycling trails have been developed and marked;
– rest areas and visitor infrastructure have been created;
– the “Made in Bison Land” brand was established to support local producers;
– a network of approximately 90 local partners has been consolidated, ranging from local administrations and Vânători-Neamț Natural Park to hosts, artisans, and schools.
We are a small team.
But we keep things connected.
And balance is not an accident. It is the result of constant work and long-term responsibility.
Be 3.5% of a whole! Why your choice matters
There are few moments when you can directly decide what happens to a part of the taxes you pay.
Redirecting 3.5% of your income tax is one of them.
It is not a spectacular gesture.
It will not change the world overnight.
But for the Bison Land Association, it means trust and continuity.
It means that existing trails can be maintained.
That local producers and artisans can be supported and promoted to grow naturally.
That events bringing the community together can continue.
That education for nature and heritage remains a priority.
That the development of this territory remains balanced.
It is not an additional donation and does not involve any extra cost. These are funds already withheld by the state. The difference is that, through your choice, they can remain in Bison Land – Neamț County’s ecotourism destination.
In a real place, born from a legend dating back to the founding of Moldavia.
In a real community.
With effects that become visible over time.
You may not immediately see the result of your gesture.
But it will exist—in a maintained trail, in a producer who continues their work, in a child who learns why the bison has returned home.
The answer to the child’s question…
“And who makes sure they stay here?”
The answer is simple: people.
Local administrations. The Natural Park. Producers. Artisans. Responsible tourists. External funders. Partners. Our team.
And those who choose, year after year, to support this construction.

It takes about two minutes.
But the effects are built over many years.
Bison Land is not just a beautiful place in Neamț County.
It is a model of sustainable development.
And models continue only when they are supported.
